In the magic of the Biennale Arte 2022, the tradition of Venetian mosaic and the elegance of French fashion come together in an unprecedented work: Mosaica, the reinterpretation of the iconic Lady Dior bag by artist Fabrizio Plessi. A visionary project that celebrates the art of mosaic through the use of Orsoni Venezia 1888’s precious 24K gold leaf mosaics.
Conceived as a fusion of luxury and artistic tradition, Mosaica is much more than a handbag—it is a true work of art. The project was realized in collaboration with Dior and the Orsoni mosaic artisans.
Every detail tells the story of an ancient craft: over 2,200 mosaic tiles in 24K gold leaf, produced in Orsoni’s historic furnaces in Venice, were meticulously applied to cover the surface of the Lady Dior. The result is a precious and unique object that shines with a timeless glow.
One of the most extraordinary elements of this creation is the side of the bag, which incorporates a digital screen where the Dior name appears and disappears in an undulating motion. This visual effect evokes the ripples of the Venetian lagoon, a recurring theme in Fabrizio Plessi’s work.
Through this fusion of technology and craftsmanship, Mosaica becomes the perfect symbol of Venice—a city suspended between history and innovation, between land and sea, between past and future.
To celebrate this unique collaboration, Mosaica was exhibited at the Dior boutique in San Marco, just steps away from the artistic heart of the city. This space became the perfect stage for a dialogue between mosaic art and haute couture, showcasing the invaluable heritage of Italian craftsmanship.
Since 1888, Orsoni Venezia has safeguarded the ancient art of mosaic, preserving Byzantine techniques that have made its name synonymous with excellence worldwide. Each gold leaf tile is still handcrafted in the wood-fired kilns of its historic Cannaregio workshop, keeping a millennia-old art alive.
With Mosaica, Orsoni once again affirms its ability to reinvent mosaic in a contemporary way, collaborating with artists and fashion maisons to create unique and timeless masterpieces.
