On Thursday, October 10, the first of three lectures ‘Stories of Mosaics and Venice’ took place, a series of three meetings in the Color Library promoted by the Orsoni furnace in collaboration with the Torcellani Study Center.
Three events at the Orsoni furnace to talk, together with scholars and researchers, about the ancient mosaics that have been admired for centuries and continue to be the subject of study and discovery.
The schedule of the meetings kicks off on Thursday, October 10, with the recent publication by Marco Molin, Torcello Antica e Moderna. Studio di Nicolò Battaglini. Published in 2023 in the Quaderni Torcellani series edited by Marco Molin, director of the Torcellani Study Center, the text offers a critical edition of the work printed in 1871 by Nicolò Battaglini, who was the first director of the Torcello Museum. It is an interesting and previously unpublished snapshot of the island during the second half of the 19th century. Marco Molin will engage in a dialogue with Laura Tonicello, Cultural Manager of the Orsoni furnace.
The second event will take place on Thursday, October 24, with Emanuela Penni, who will present her work on Dante and the Mosaics of Torcello. A professor at the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in Forlì, Penni will present her studies, through which she has demonstrated how the great poet of Italian literature drew inspiration from the splendid mosaics of the lagoon cathedral for his works. Emanuela Penni will engage in a dialogue with Marco Molin, director of the Torcellani Study Center.
The final event will be held on Wednesday, November 6, with Ester Brunet, a professor at the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in Padua, who will speak on Marian Iconography in the Mosaics of San Marco: Theology, Politics, Devotion, offering a broad overview of a theme so dear to the history of Venice and well-present in what was, for centuries, the state church of the Serenissima. Ester Brunet will engage in a dialogue with Marco Molin, director of the Torcellani Study Center.
